AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON VEGETABLE CULTIVATION AND FIELD DAY ON YARD LONG BEAN VARIETY ARKA MANGALA

 

One day awareness programme on vegetable cultivation and Field day on Yard long bean variety Arka Mangala was organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gonikoppal at  Nalloor village of Virajpet taluk on 12th May 2017. Sixty farmers and officials from, College of Forestry under UAHS Shimoga,  Department of Horticulture, Agriculture and ATMA participated in the event.

 

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. T.S. Aghora, Principal Scientist, Division of Vegetable crops, IIHR, Bengaluru.  In his inaugural speech he spoke about the prospects of summer vegetable cultivation after the main crop paddy in the district and particularly cultivation of leguminous vegetable crops (Beans, Yard long bean, Dolichos).  Apart from getting income  in a short span of 2 to 3 months, this practice can also aid in  enhancing the soil fertility. He gave farmers tips on vegetable cultivation both organic and inorganic. He also praised Mr. Thimmaiah, S.C., in whose field the vegetable was cultivated and appreciated the innovativeness of the farmer for accepting the challenge of taking up the yard long bean crop for seed production. He also  requested all the participants to utilize the research outcomes and adopt the  promising technologies developed by IIHR in the field of fruit, vegetable and flower crops.

 

 

Shri Thimmaiah, the farmer explained about how he is managing different crops in his farm. He is trying to cultivate most of the crops in his farm and especially the vegetables in an eco friendly manner. All the organic inputs required for his farm are located within his farm, which has helped him in reducing the cost of cultivation.   Dr. Saju George, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, Gonikoppal talked about the efforts put by Shri Thimmaiah in cultivating different vegetable crops from IIHR and also for his innovativeness in marketing of the vegetables. He has further involved his whole family in the cultivation of vegetables. Dr. Srinvas Rao, Principal Scientist, Division of Vegetable crops, IIHR, Bengaluru also addressed the gathering and informed about the new varieties in cucurbitaceous vegetable crops  and  eco friendly management of vegetable crops. Dr. Ramesh, Associate Professor, Extension Education Unit, College of Forestry (UAHS, Shivamogga) spoke about the  demonstration units established in Madikkeri for popularisation of vegetable cultivation.

 

 

Officials from Department of Agriculture and Department of Horticulture, ATMA officials also participated in the event.  The programme was compeered and facilitated by Mr. B. Prabhakar, SMS, Horticulture. Field day ended with vote of thanks by Mr. Veerendrakumar, K.V. SMS (Plant Protection), KVK, Gonikoppal.
