A brief report on Vermicomposting at IIHR, Bengaluru

A brief report on Vermicomposting at IIHR, Bengaluru

The process of vermicomposting at IIHR began during November 2016. The farm wastes were chopped into small pieces, leaf litter under Mango orchard, Ficus tree were collected and dumped in 5 cement pits (3.3 m X 1 m and 2 m depth). Cow dung at the rate of 150 kg per pit was incorporated at an interval of 4-5 days. The pit was watered once in 2-3 days. Two Kg's of Earthworm comprising Eudrilus eugeniae, Eisenia fotida and Perionyx excavatus were released in each pit. The length of worms varied from 300 mm to 100 mm and breadth from 5 - 10 mm. The fecundity of each female adult varied from 100-150 numbers per year. The Earthworms directly formed cocoons. Cocoons were collected from the pit using 0.5mm mesh sieve every week. The total lifecycle of worms varied from 4-6 weeks. Worms can live for 1 year, under favourable conditions they can live for 4-8 years. At the end of 6 months 1 ton of vermi manure per pit was produced and about 5 Kg's of worms could be recovered from each pit.
